Stanley Cup Winners
The Stanley Cup Playoffs, the grueling "season within a season" determines the best team in the NHL. Many factors come into play during the Playoffs that have nothing to do with what happened in the regular season. A Stanley Cup Champion needs to have three key factors - depth, experience, and solid goaltending.
In the playoffs, the checking gets tighter, and the man to man matchups become all important. Teams that have a deep, balanced roster will almost always fare better than a team with one or two superstars. Take the New Jersey Devils, for example. They have never had a true "superstar" while playing the same "system" year after year. Yet they've won two Cups and seem to be in the hunt year after year.
There is no substitue for Stanley Cup experience. The pressure an intensity of a Cup series is like no other in sports. Players that have "been there" have an edge. Goaltending is all-important in the Stanley Cup hunt. A solid goalie can make all the difference.
The Stanley Cup, originally referred to as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, is awarded each year by the National Hockey League to the champion of its playoff tournament. Here is the list of Stanley Cup Champions from 1892 to the present, over a century of Stanley Cup winners:
